Kuching, Sarawak

Kuching , also known as Cat City, is one of the most vibrant cities in the region and it is the largest city on the island of Borneo. The origin of the city’s name remains an enigma – there is a separate explanation whereby it may actually be a variation of the Indian name for “port” – “Cochin”. I was hoping to find a new typology of Malaysian architecture on the other side of the South China Sea, and only to find how close Kuching is to resemble any major Western Malaysia cities.

1. Kuching River and the New State Assembly Hall.

During our visit, the city suffered from serious haze pollution due to forest fire. The afternoon sun was barely visible.

2. On the Waterfront.

One of the ‘must-dos’ – Take a boat ride to the other side of the Kuching River for 30 cents.
(I didn’t, it was too slow)

3. Damai Beach

The beach is situated at the foothills of the legendary Mount Santubong. It is the most popular and scenic beach.

4. Orang Ulu Longhouse, Sarawak Cultural Village
One of the most impressive longhouses in the cultural village. A longhouse constitutes a series of interconnecting rooms built on stilts.

5. Bidayuh Longhouse

This round head house is unique.

6. Kampung Annah Rais Long House

All communal activities happen in the verandah covered by one roof.

8. Red Lantern of Tua Pek Kong Temple

The old and new lamps.

9. Tua Pek Kong Temple

The temple was erected in 1843 by a group of Chinese immigrants thankful for their safe journey across the hazardous South China Sea. New immigrants still come here to give thanks for their safe arrival.

10. Masjid India along Jalan Gambier

Situated in between Lebuh India and Jalan Gambier, the mosque was built by Indian Muslim traders in 1876. The streets around the mosque are a labyrinth of small Indian shops and spicy curry-scented restaurants.

12. Chinatown & Main Bazaar

the area is bustling with local produce and fabrics shops…

This postmodernist structure is magnificently lit at night.
